The Princess's Tale Raya and the Last Dragon is a dystopian action adventure that shows Disney's ability to adapt their animation formula to the blockbuster age. Its protagonist (Kelly Marie Tran) is a highly driven martial artist as well as the daughter of the chief. Its obligatory cute animal
Tuk Tuk, Raya's armadillo-pill-bug hybrid companion, is a dependable horse capable of guiding her through pursuit sequences. While Raya and the Last Dragon's slickness might be irritating, its Southeast Asian fantasy world is captivating and wonderfully portrayed. Despite the film's plodding forward momentum in its save-the-world story, it nevertheless has moments of true compassion, many of them courtesy of Sisu, the film's titular naive and kind dragon, who is convincingly voiced by Awkwafina. —A.W.
